Well it goes without saying that since this is a Konami game the infamous UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B,A,Start trick works great to power-up your ships while your game is paused. This trick only works for Salamander and Life Force, it will not work for Salamander 2 unfortunately.
