VIRTUA FIGHTER 3 ROCKET

Virtua Fighter 3 Rocket is a tournament version of VF3 that allows you or your opponent to select three characters to battle in a tournament type mode. It is currently in a number of Japanese arcades, most notably in the Sega High Tech Land in Akihabar.

When you play, you and your opponent (human or CPU) get to choose three characters for your team, with the option to have as many of the same character that you would like. You start out with your first character, if you lose with that character, you then play with the second character, if you lose with the second you then use the third character, and finally if you lose with the third character, the game is over. If you win you get to use that character for the next fight and if your life bar is above 50% damage it is recovered back to full health. If your bar is less than 50% damage you heal back up to 50%.

Besides the battle mode, VF3 Rocket also features new ground throws for Aoi and new camera angles for the one player mode. With Aoi, instead of just having leg breaks, she has some arm breaks, and she has some new ground throws, to eliminate a lot of that weird flip flopping. And for the new camera angles, the player has the option to change camera angles, which includes a first person view and over the top view in addition to the normal view.

NEW SATURN IMPORTS AVAILABLE

Last Bronx, Rockman X4 and Slayers Royal are all currently available at some import stores in the US and should be readily available by the end of this week. Last Bronx is the AM3 fighter that is probably the first game to actually look better than VF2 on the Saturn. Rockman X4 is the latest Mega Man game from Capcom and is quite possibly the best based on the short time I spent playing it at E3. And Slayers Royal is an RPG, I don't know any more about it.

WORLD SERIES BASEBALL '98 PRESS RELEASE

Who needs crowded ballparks, stale peanuts and crazy fans? Everything baseball fans love about America's favorite pastime is now in the home with "World Series Baseball `98" for Sega Saturn. SEGA SPORTS has built upon the videogame industry's best-selling baseball game series to create authentic major league fun. "World Series Baseball `98" is available exclusively for Sega Saturn and Sega Genesis.

"World Series Baseball `98" makes the experience real. The game possesses fluid animation and fast gameplay essential to a realistic baseball videogame. Full motion capture technology was used to enable the player to simulate real-life movements of Major Leaguers in three different skill levels. The game also uses a powerful new 3D polygon-based engine for smooth "off-the-bat" ball tracking and gameplay. "World Series Baseball `98's" advanced AI technology means players must use actual baseball skill and strategy to win the pennant -- this is no walk in the ballpark.

Everyone knows baseball is nothing without the teams and players, so "World Series Baseball `98" is fully licensed by MLB and the MLBPA. The game features full rosters and stats of all the players, including those of rookies just signed. To add to this realism, the game features actual CD-quality stadium sound effects and comprehensive play-by-play commentary.

"World Series Baseball `98" features four modes of play, including a 162-game pennant race, play-off modes, and a power hitter duel in "Home Run Derby." The season mode, featuring the 1997 Major League Baseball schedule, even includes the all-new Interleague play. For the first time ever, the National and American leagues will play head-to-head in the ballparks and in "World Series Baseball `98." Players can track and store the expanded season statistics in more than 20 key categories.

"Our baseball titles have been a special focus for our developers since the first game was released for Sega Genesis," said Bernard Stolar, chief operating officer, Sega of America. "The game's designers have placed realism as their central goal in `World Series Baseball `98' and have maintained their dedication to delivering a superior baseball videogame."

That dedication shows in the detail of 30 ballparks which are rendered based on real-life photos and utilize the same 3D, texture mapped graphics that helped make the parks of the original game the "standard to beat." With the addition of ballparks still under construction or just finished, including Turner Field, Tropicana Field, Bank One Ballpark and changes to the Oakland Alameda County Stadium, this is as authentic as a gamer can get without even picking up a bat.

ATARI ARCADE CLASSICS COMPATIBLE WITH NET LINK MOUSE

I understand that this isn't really a news story, but I felt Saturn owners would like to know this. The Night's controller isn't supported in games like Centipede, Missile Command, Tempest, and Breakout. But, the Netlink Mouse works great in these games in the Arcades Greatest Hits Atari Vol. 1 for the Sega Saturn. Special thanks to Tom Berrodin for this information.

Be sure to have your money ready, as this is another must-buy game for RPG fans.

LUSCIOUS JACKSON SINGER TO DO LAURA'S VOICE IN E0

Sega of America announced today that Jill Cunniff, lead singer of the rock band Luscious Jackson, will be the voice for the "digital actress," Laura Lewis, in the much anticipated video game/interactive movie "Enemy Zero".

The game, highly reliant on the revolutionary audio effects and soundtrack to build suspense, will be available for the Sega Saturn video game system and the PC this fall.

In "Enemy Zero," the main character Laura Lewis is the sole survivor on a spacecraft and must rely on her inner strength, determination, strong will and senses to find and kill the invisible deadly alien on board. Cunniff's unique voice will play a significant role in the game because players get audio clues from her, among other sources, to survive.

"This game was designed around the concept that what you hear can be as useful or frightening as what you see -- your imagination goes wild with all kinds of scenarios about what you're likely to encounter around every corner," said Jill Cunniff, lead singer of Luscious Jackson. "I am excited about this project because it gives me a chance to stretch my performance abilities to convey all the terror, frustration, anger and surprise found in the game."

"Cunniff has a widespread appeal with both men and women of all ages, and with the overwhelming popularity of Luscious Jackson, we saw this as a perfect fit," said Bernard Stolar, chief operating officer, Sega of America. "From the high resolution interactive graphics to the voice of one of their favorite rock singers, gamers and music fans alike will be amazed with all that `Enemy Zero' has to offer."

"Enemy Zero" is an alien adventure where players must rely on five senses to kill an attacker they can't see. With visually stunning 3D graphics and heart-pounding sound effects, players must survive through hours of intense gameplay using their instincts to find clues, weapons and maps in order to defeat the creature lurking on board the spacecraft.

New York based rock band Luscious Jackson is comprised of four female musicians. They have recently released the album Fever In Fever Out, featuring the hit single, "Naked Eye," which is currently a hit on the Billboard Top 100.

Created by renowned artist Kenji Eno (creator of "D"), "Enemy Zero" contains the same sophistication, intensity, exquisite graphics and compelling story content for which his multi-million dollar Japanese production company is known. Eno created Laura Lewis as the industry's first "digital actress" -- the same woman plays different leading roles in different video games.

With a score composed by Michael Nyman, Academy Award Nominee for The Piano soundtrack, "Enemy Zero" sustains its horror movie-like atmosphere, keeping players on the edge of their seats for hours of game play.

"Enemy Zero" will be available in retail outlets nationwide for the Sega Saturn and PC for $49.99 this November.

SEGASOFT DECIDES TO USE CYBERCASH CYBERCOIN FOR HEAT.NET

SegaSoft, Inc. announced today that it has selected the CyberCash CyberCoin micropayment system for HEAT, SegaSoft's new game network, and SegaSoft.com, the company's always irreverent corporate Web site.

With CyberCoin service, HEAT and SegaSoft.com members will be able to purchase power-ups (game-specific software upgrades), game titles and other digital assets in little more time than it takes to download them. Music CDs, T-shirts and other goods will also be available for purchase at both sites.

Developed by CyberCash, Inc., of Reston, Va., the micropayment system will enable SegaSoft to sell products and services cost- effectively at its online sites. SegaSoft customers will enjoy the convenience of ordering, paying for and receiving digital goods and services online without the hassle of having to phone or fax in credit card or other financial information every time they make a purchase. "CyberCoin makes sense for SegaSoft and its customers," said Sean Ryan, SegaSoft vice president of business development. "With CyberCoin, we can offer Web Vengeance, for example, for $4.95. As we roll out HEAT, this capability will become even more useful."

Both HEAT and SegaSoft.com will begin using the payment system later this summer.

"We are delighted to be working in partnership with SegaSoft to facilitate online commerce on HEAT and SegaSoft.com," said Jeff Irby, CyberCash vice president of sales and marketing. "With our CyberCoin service, SegaSoft will be able to offer consumers hundreds of low-cost items to enhance their online experience."

SEGA TEAMS WITH UNDERGROUND DJS TO CREATE DANCE CLUB MIX

Sega of America has joined forces with two of the world's top underground DJs, Commander Tom and DJ MARS, to create a dance club mix from the music in its hit game for Sega Saturn, "Fighters MegaMix."

The song, titled "Fighters: The Sega Project," will debut on KLYY FM's radio show "Liphted" in Los Angeles this Friday, July 25 and will be released as a single on Commander Tom's upcoming CD in September.

Commander Tom and DJ MARS are known by radio stations and clubs around the world for their intricate beats and dance tracks. "Fighters: The Sega Project" features music found in the actual game combined with the talented duo's popular underground style to create a dance club hit. Sega will be conducting a wide-scale promotion for the song, which will be available in August online through the Sega website. (http://www.sega.com), then through Commander Tom's new CD in September.

Lead industry magazine DJ Trax has chosen "Fighters: The Sega Project" as an upcoming single to be sent to 60 DJs in the Los Angeles area for evaluation and to play in their clubs. In addition, radio stations in New York and Los Angeles will be giving away the mix to listeners after the song's debut.

"This song gives us a new avenue for reaching the important youth audience," said Bernard Stolar, chief operating officer, Sega of America. "We think of our games as being total entertainment experiences -- `Fighters: The Sega Project' builds on that theory."

The song itself started as a promotional give-away item. Sega approached DJ MARS and Commander Tom after hearing of their reputation in the music industry and their love for video games. Sega provided the music and sounds from the game and let the DJs do what they do best. Sega will make samples of the song available through Real Audio audio streaming off the Sega website so consumers can hear and enjoy the DJ mix live, in addition to radio airplay.

"Commander Tom has been playing video games for years and I always wanted to do something with a company like Sega," said DJ MARS. "We feel the mix accurately conveys all the action found in the game, while staying true to the dance club scene."

"Fighters MegaMix" was released in May of this year and has risen to the top of the sales charts, becoming the number one-selling game for Sega Saturn this year. The game combines the characters from two of Sega's most popular franchises, the Virtua Fighters series and "Fighting Vipers." "Fighters MegaMix" allows players to challenge opponents as any one of 32 unique fighters in 21 arenas. Next Generation magazine, one of the industry's leading video game publications, called "Fighters MegaMix" the "ultimate fighting game."

SEGA SHOWS SUPPORT FOR CHINESE MARKET

Sega Enterprises Ltd., in a bold move recently, announced that it plans to enter the Chinese market with full-scale sales of it's Sega Saturn video game system. After extensive market research conducted in the latter part of 1996, Sega is confident that it can sell it's system in China and beat out the pirate versions of it's hardware and software which are currently available. Sega will be a pioneer in this, as they will be the first major Japanese video game hardware company to attempt to penetrate the pirate-soaked Chinese market: Nintendo Co. and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. have, as of yet, not attempted such a feet.

Sega Enterprises Ltd., has already made a connection with a local Chinese computer retailer, securing and establishing a sales network. The Sega Saturn will retail for 1,600 yuan (approx. $200 US), at some 200 direct outlets throughout China operated by Sega's new partner. As well, the company will sell the Sega Saturn through it's various showrooms. Along with the Saturn, Sega will release 16 software titles, and they plan to release games created by other companies at some point in the future. Sega Enterprises Co. is hopeful of the attempt to enter the Chinese market, setting their first year sales target at around 1 billion yen, or 40,000 machines.

SEGA WILL NOT USE 3DFX CHIPSET IN ITS NEXT SYSTEM

3Dfx Interactive has learned from Sega Enterprises LTD. today that Sega will not use the 3Dfx 3D graphics processing chipset for the next generation Sega home gaming console. This announcement comes despite an existing contract for 3Dfx Interactive to develop the 3D graphics engine for Sega's next video game system.

"We are disappointed with this notification, and believe that it is without legal justification," said Greg Ballard, President and CEO, 3Dfx Interactive. "However, it is important to remember that Sega is only a fraction of our business, representing less than 10 percent of our projected 1998 revenue. Our base business of selling 3D accelerator chips into the PC market remains strong and is even strengthening. We will release our earnings after the market closes on Thursday, July 24, and anticipate that they will be consistent with analysts' expectations. In addition, the rest of 1997 already looks to be very positive."

3Dfx Interactive has been working under contract with Sega since March of this year to develop and license a proprietary chipset for use in the new Sega game console. Sega has an equity investment of nearly $2 million in 3Dfx Interactive, and has funded development of the chipset to date.

3Dfx Interactive believes that, under the terms of its contract with Sega, this decision by Sega requires the Company to explore its options, including legal recourse.

JOE MONTANA SUING SEGA OF AMERICA

In a suit filed on Monday, former football star and San Francisco Bay Area resident Joe Montana filed a lawsuit against Sega of America. Montana alleges that Sega broke a three-year contract and is asking for $5 million in retribution. According to the documents, Montana negotiated a three-year contract that gave Sega the right to use his name in video games as well as three days of his time per year for personal appearances.

Montana, formerly a quarterback with the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs, had worked on licensing deals with Sega since March 1990. The last agreement, which was negotiated over a six-month period in 1995, began in January 1996 and was canceled seven months later. Some time ago, Sega released a product for the Sega Genesis called Joe Montana II Sports Talk Football. Since then, the latest product to be endorsed by Montana has yet to appear on shelves. (PLEASE NOTE: the last Sega football game to have the Montana name on it was actually NFL '94 starring Joe Montana for the Genesis, a special thanks to Skid for pointing out this error)

3DFX SHARES PLUNGE ON UNCERTAINTY ABOUT SEGA CONTRACT

3Dfx Interactive Inc.'s stock price plunged as much as 43 percent Monday after the computer chip maker said Sega Enterprises Ltd. , a key customer, has not yet decided whether it will use a 3Dfx chip in its next-generation video game machine. San Jose, Calif.-based 3Dfx fell $4.625 to $11.50 a share in early afternoon trading on Nasdaq, where it was the biggest percentage loser. Earlier, the stock traded as low as $9.25.

3Dfx, which went public late last month, makes computer chips that improve the capabilities of computers to handle 3-D graphics and animation. Its stock price jumped to $18.625 earlier this month from the initial offering price of $11, fueled by prospects of supplying chips for a new video game console Sega has in the works.

3Dfx said Monday, however, that a ``faction'' within Sega is pushing the Japanese video game company to consider a rival chip from NEC Corp. As of Friday, discussions were still going on within Sega about which chip to use, said 3Dfx Chief Financial Officer Gary Martin. ``All we know right now is that we have a valid contract to build a part'' for Sega's upcoming machine, Martin said. If Sega backs out of the contract, 3Dfx could get compensatory damages, he said.

NETLINK TO USE INFOSPACE'S AWARD WINNING DIRECTORIES

Sega and InfoSpace, Inc. today announced an agreement under which InfoSpace's award winning directories will be integrated with Sega Saturn's NetLink that turns the Sega Saturn video game console into a TV-based Internet access device. InfoSpace is the only directory service that has yellow pages that provide detailed business information nationwide, white pages, company web sites, toll-free numbers, fax numbers, e-mail addresses, and local city information including weather, traffic, apartments and much more. InfoSpace's directories can be seen at http://www.infospace.com and http://www.sega.com/.

"Our partnerships with leading companies like Sega reaffirms the fact that InfoSpace is the number one choice for finding information about businesses and people," said Naveen Jain, president of InfoSpace. "Sega Saturn is already a popular home entertainment device. Now, people will also be able to enjoy seamless access to InfoSpace's award winning services."

Sega Saturn Net Link users can access the directories via the "What's New" pages or by clicking on the "Locator" button available with 3.0 version of the Net Link browser. The service is available free of charge to all Sega Saturn Net Link owners. The Sega Saturn Net Link combines two consumer entertainment products in one: an advanced 32-bit CD-based video game system and a 28.8Kbps modem providing full Internet functionality for e-mail and Web surfing. It is the only affordably priced TV Internet product offering a hybrid of CD drives functionality combined with Internet access.

"Sega Saturn's NetLink allows for networked game play and full Internet access," said Paul Stathacopculos, Net Link producer Sega Saturn. "Integration of InfoSpace with Sega Saturn NetLink will enable people to use the rich content of InfoSpace's directories from all over the world right from their television sets."

KONAMI OF JAPAN STILL SHOWING SATURN SUPPORT

Konami's support for the Sega Saturn is much stronger in Japan as they are currently well into development of game like Suikoden, Vandel Hearts and Dracula X, which are all to arrive in Japan sometime in late 1997. Konami has also begun development of J-League Soccer, which is supposed to be similar to the N64's J-League Perfect Striker, which is currently the best soccer title ever created. What is even more intriguing is that Konami developers are willing to develop Metal Gear Solid for the Saturn if the demand is great enough.

SEGA GIVES THEIR SIDE OF THE STORY

This is Sega's response to the WD/Sega situation as posted on their website at www.sega.com:

Here’s the actual timetable of events. In January, Sega decided that no third party would have "condos" - exclusive areas with meeting rooms - on the Sega of America E3 show floor. We made this decision to be fair to everyone, since we obviously couldn't offer free space to every Sega partner. Our third party group informed all companies which inquired about this policy. In February, SOA had determined exactly the amount of floor space we would utilize - deciding not to use the entire space we were allocated. SOA started talking to other companies about sub-leasing our extra space. Gretchen Eichinger, Group Director of Third Party Licensing for Sega, learned from Lee McEnany, Vice President of Communications, that we had space available to sell. Eichinger immediately called Working Designs from McEnany’s office to let them know that indeed SOA had space to sell. She then faxed Working Designs a floor plan. Working Designs accepted the space. Up to and during the show, Sega heard nothing about Working Designs being disappointed with anything regarding the show. Unfortunately, instead of talking directly with Sega regarding their issues, Victor Ireland chose to launch an attack stating is dissatisfaction in public on Internet bulletin boards and web sites, which we fell is highly improper and unprofessional. It was not until Sega placed a call to Working Designs earlier this week that we were able to address the issues in person, which is what we believe Working Designs should have done from the beginning if they had concerns about their space at the show.

WORKING DESIGNS' RESPONSE TO SEGA'S COMMENTS

Below is Victor Ireland's response to the above comments by Sega of America, as posted on and reported by GameSpot News:

"I will only comment on two parts, in defense of our company. First, I don't ever recall Gretchen calling me on any occasion. I met her for the first time on the last day of the E3 show. In general, all contact with Sega is with our account manager. Second, the call Sega made to us earlier this week was extremely one-sided, with our award-winning efforts for the Sega being dismissed as 'uninteresting' and 'uncreative.'

"We have the highest respect and regard for Sega of Japan, the parent company of SoA, and do not wish to sully Sega's overall reputation further with a public dissection of our reasons for discontinuing Sega Saturn support after Lunar: Silver Star Story.

"I will say that the response you sent us is riddled with 'spin' and outright inaccuracy. To pick it apart publicly would do nothing more than fan the flames of a situation which has careened out of control.

"I would hope that fans of our company and products would know from our past record that we have never been anything but truthful, candid, and forthcoming in our contact with our customers in person, in writing, and on the Internet. In the interests of making certain we actually do release all announced product for Saturn, we must refuse all further comment on this issue and would hope that SoA is finished as well."
